suspect. again, they drove that stolen cab away a few minutes ago as they cleared the scene. that's the latest from the san francisco state university campus. i'm arturo santiago. "today in the bay." at 6:02. new this morning, the labor department just released the latest unemployment report and it was not what analyst expected. employers added just 88,000 jobs last month. less than half of what economists expected. actually, the lowest job total in nine months. the unemployment rate dropped slightly to 7.6% down from last month. it's little comfort compared to the low number of jobs reported. so what do these numbers mean to us? psychological mcgrew is breaking it all down right now. he is going to join us in ten minutes with a full report. >>. >> they are breaking things down at at&t park a lot going on, getting ready for the world champion giants, set for their home opener z. >> "g" men going in today's game after taking their opening series against the dodgers.

live at at&t park where the giants will hoist that world champion flag up in hours. good morning, bob. >> reporter: this is the start of starting pitch 1:35. jon and laura, first of three games against the st. louis cardinals. we are joined right now by mario alioto, the senior v.p. of business operations. you are raising the flag before the game? >> yes. >> you are playing against the st. louis cardinals? yes. >> there is no strategy in it for them. >> we opened up against the cardinals. both times, they are going to stand there and watch us raise the flag. we beat them out in the national league world championship league. you are not going to say who is throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. >> raising the flag is a big deal. we have spent a lot of time how we are going to top that two years ago, brian wilson surprised everyone and ran up.

we have a great ceremony planned. we are not going to release that one. you know us, we like to keep some secrets up our sleeve. it is going to be a really fun afternoon. >> tickets, are they still available? >> opening day, we are just about sold out at this point. we sold tickets for the visiting team. there will be a few stragglers that will get back to the window. if you are thinking about it, probably worth a chance to come on down, go to the windows and see if you may get lucky. >> any big change for the fan experience at at&t park? >> we always talk about our food. great new food offerings. some of the suites have been remodeled. the ballpark looks pretty good. it is ready to go. it is going to be a great weekend. tomorrow, we are going to honor buster posey. on sunday, we are handing out the world series rings. >> did you forget to pay the pg&e bill bill? that why the lights went out. >> the rain is holding off. >> it is opening day. >> quickly, for people that

we have all the maintenance crews out here. everybody working hard for the big opening day. a lot of people are excited about it. let's get to your forecast for today. the sun will light up this park and, yeah, that is a sure thing. temperaturewise today, we are talking about the upper 60s inland. close to 70 degrees just about everywhere inland. we'll be toward the low 60s, mid-60s at the coast and around the bay. overall, looking at a warmer afternoon. we are done with the rain. you might find a little bit of drizzle. we are certainly seeing that out here at the park from time to time. steady. it stops for ten minutes at a time. it does look like the lights are coming back on. i can tell you right now, it is going to be a really, really exciting home opener out here at at&t park. a lot more to come. your seven-day outlook tells the story of the weekend. a few more showers on sunday. back out here live. hopefully, we will get the lights on in this place. i have a lot i want to show you guys. stay tuned.

new details in a deadly shootout inside a mississippi police station. the shootout happened at the jackson mississippi police headquarters while a detective was questioning his suspect. investigators say a fight broke out and shots were fired. the detective and the suspect were killed. investigators say they were both shot several times. the suspect was being questioned on a separate fatal stabbing case. the time is 6:13. time for a quick check of the day's top stories. south korean news media

reporting north korea has prepared two medium range missiles for launch. the move heightening fears that pyongyang could launch an attack against the south after several threats of war from the north. san francisco police looking for a driver who stole a cab and led police through a chase. they chased him up the peninsula to san francisco state university while he jumped out of the cab while it was still rolling and got away. >> a punol police officer earning high praise after literally jumping into action to save a tsa agent at the airport. he was waiting in line when he saw a woman attacking the tsa agent. he jumped over the ground and whes ld her. we will be hearing from that officer and why he didn't think twice before jumping into action 6:14. president obama is taking some heat for something he said during a fund-raiser here in the bay area. he introduced long-time supporter, kamala harris as

saying, she is brilliant and she is dedicated and tough and also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country. kamala harris is here. the quote is generating headlines and attracting attentionme attention. some are calling receipt mark sexist. and others, much ado about nothing. >> first lady, michelle obama, mistakenly calling herself a single mother before quickly correcting herself. she was discussing her let's move campaign. when she says, believe me, as a busy single mother or i shouldn't say, single. as a busy mother. when you have the husband who is president. it can feel a little single but he is there. >> the president is now back at the white house after his brief visit to the bay area yesterday. this is a photo of the president at san francisco's field. before boarding marine one on

his way to atherton. >> the president will have to deal with starting, some startling new jobs numbers this morning. 88,000 jobs added in the month of march. really disappointing numbers. 88,000 in the month of march so far below the predictions of 200,000 that pundits are scrambling to explain it. laura, the unemployment rate falls to 7.6%. hopefully, i've trained you by now to ignore that number, up or down 0.10 of a percent, no big deal. what we care about is the big number, this 88,000 jobs added to the economy. the number of missing here is the number of the participation rate. that's what we really care about. the number of people that have decided to come into the labor department or the labor market. they skrurs t they are just not existing anymore. the lowest participation we have seen since 1979. the number, 88,000 barely covers

the number of 18-year-olds that had a birthday last month and therefore start to be counted as any potential workers. >> the other big news is hewlett-packard and ray lane, the chairman of hewlett-packard. he is stepping down. he will still be part of the board this morning. this comes after he barely won the shareholder vote to reelect him. lane was share man when hp made that disastrous $11 billion decision to buy british company, autonomy. the strange thin is lane was brought in to repair things after hp's disaster with the oust of ceo mark heard. he was brought in to repair the disaster from the phone scandal from the previous ceo. i think you see a pat ter here. hp has an interim chairman. >> the japanese have come up with a plan that some have labeled in sane. they are going to inject the equivalent of $2 trillion.

with a "t" into it's economy. it will drive-in vest stores out of government bonds. it will make people's savings accounts pay nothing in interest, encouraging them to spend money they have saved. lots of people could make the argument. our own fed does this too. our own head of the fed, ben bernanke, once proposed, i'm not kidding. he probably was, printing up billions of dollars. renting helicopters, flying over american cities and dumping the money over the side as a way of driving over the economy. this is why he has the nickname helicopter ben. if you just suddenly heard something about dumping helicopter money, it is not actually going to happen. if you are just half paying attention and getting the lunches ready, we are just illustrating a point. >> you just woke up a lot of people in the bay area. >> what time? what time? >> it is raining money. you better go help answer those

calls. right now, hets head back out to at&t park with a look at the weather with christina loren rolling the yard. good morning. good morning to you, jon and laura. good morning to you at home. there is nowhere i would rather be this morning. as you know, home opener today at at&t park. a little drizzle isn't going to keep anybody indoors. in fact, you will notice the entire field is mostly uncovered. we do have a tarp over the pitcher's mound and over the home plate. what i can tell you right now is it is going to be a really nice day. we are going to lose this chance for low clouds and drizzle as of about 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. today. we are looking good in terms of your forecast. overall, i'm forecasting the upper 50s for today's game. winds are going to pick up and play a factor. we could actually see that ball get carried out to center field with winds north/northwest at 10-15 miles an hour.

you can't go wrong loving it. bee happy. bee healthy. with clusters of flakes and o's. oh, ho ho... it's the honey sweetness. i...i mean, you...love. new this morning, the rainy weather bringing some unusual sights to northern california. take a look at these snapshots that were taken yesterday. a funnel cloud spotted near corning, just north of chico. a tornado warning was issued but no reports of any twisters there touching down. that's close enough. over in peru, hundreds of people being called heroes after helping get a mom and her newborn to the hospital. 300 taxis and motor bikes rushed to a remote airstrip in the middle of the amazon forest and mother had complications during birth and needed immediate medical attention. the owner of a cessna offered to

fly the pair but couldn't because the runway did not have lights. a local radio station put out a call for help and less than 30 minutes later, hundreds of people arriving to light up that runway. the plane was then able to take off safely. >> isn't that a great story? >> a community coming together just to get the lights on that runway to take off. >> beautiful. 6:26 right now. still ahead, a stolen cab leads police on a high-speed chase on a bay area freeway. we are going to tell you why police are still searching for a suspect at a local college campus. somebody needed to help her. luckily, i was close enough to be able to help. we'll also tell you about a throw-down at an airport security line. we'll hear from the local officer that jumped into action after an attack on a tsa agent. taking a live look outside, transamerica pyramid. a little foggy. much clearer whether you go inland. a look at the full forecast

leads police on a chase that wound its way from interstate 280 on to state street. it all started around 2:00 this morning when officers spotted the stolen cab in the south of market district. the cab wound up at the san francisco state campus and the driver jumped out while it was still in drive and just took off. he is still at-large. arturo santiago will join us live with an update. the former nanny accused of killing two young children in new york city with a kitchen knife will face a prosecutor. they say they stabbed a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old, stabbed them to death of a dispute with their parents. this all happened back in october. their mother was out with a third child at the time. ortega scheduled to appear in manhattan state supreme court later on this morning. a memorial concert will be

held for the victims of the shooting at oikos university, last year. seven people were killed in that shooting rampage on april 2nd, 2012. the suspect, a nursing student at the school is now undergoing psychiatric treatment for schizophrenia. tomorrow, the school will hold a memorial concert at st. paul's episcopal church. a second concert is planned for next week tend in sacramento. new details on a story that played out in hawaii. is now getting plenty of play in hawaii. a local officer turned hero after he stopped an attack on an innocent tsa agent. we are hearing from the man imhad self for the very first time. officer, trying to get through security on a vacation. he was off duty when he notices a tsa agent getting attacked. you see the security officer guarding the passenger exit minding her own business. out of nowhere, this woman starts attack her and punching her. out of nowhere, you soo he that rogers just cleared. he heard ld the glass barrier there, takes the woman down, puts up his hands and let's everyone know he has it under control. you will notice he is only wearing his sox because he had just taken off his shoes as we all do when we go through security. the 39-year-old is, oh, so humble saying he just did what he had to do. >> the woman was defenseless, had her arms up trying to defend herself. somebody needed to help her. luckily, i was close enough to be able to help her. >> the attacker is homeless, arrested and charged with assault. the tsa agent says he sh is a little sore and bruised but,

otherwise, she is okay. as for justin rogers, he made it back to california safely. he is being applauded. the agency released a statement saying how grateful they are for what he did. laura and jon. >> pretty amazing story there. 6:33. let's check out things with christina loren out in the ball yard getting ready for the giants home opener. how is it looking and how are you feeling? >> reporter: i'm not going to lie, jon and laura. it is a little madamp out here. i know the forecast because i've been studying all night long. this is a big one. it does look like by gametime when the first pitch is thrown by barry zito, a mix of sun and clouds and comfortable temperatures in the upper 50s. it is going to be really nice. one of the thousands of people that will be headed out to the

park today. the first 40 fans into the park are going to receive a world series flag. traffic is going to be problematic. keep that in mind. it is going to be really jam-packed around here later on today. today's highs look good. temperatures in the upper 60s, low 70s, inland. overall, we have got a really good-looking weekend shaping up. we do have a slight chance for showers, saturday and sunday morning. you can get outdoors, saturday and sunday afternoon. temperatures will be comfortable. late sunday night, we get another round of rain as we head through monday into wednesday of next week. the warmup is on almost a taste of summer with some temperatures warming up into the 90s on wednesday when we peek. back out here live, it is such a beautiful start to the day. you can see the seagulls, actually hear them out there as well. they wouldn't be out flying if there was an incoming storm. that bodes well. also, no tarp on the field.

building collapse in mumbai, india, 45 now confirmed dead.

more than 55 others hurt. it happened earlier dh morning at what indian police say was an illegal construction site. most that ended up dying were construction workers staying in that building. the cause being investigated prior to the disaster. another person has died from a new bird flu outbreak in china. brings the total number of deaths to six since the new strain was discovered just last sunday in shanghai. authorities have since slaughtered all bow slaughter slaughtered poultry in pigeons being sold for meat. they think people are contacted the virus through direct contact with the infected foul. they said there is no evidence that avian bird flu spreads easily between people. a chithief rips off a stole

hometown crowd getting all ready for the pitch today. bob redell live at at&t park and a preview for the first home game for the world champion giants. bob, good morning. you can hear the seagull. good morning to you, jon and laura. what a beautiful park to be playing at opening day. painted on the turf here at the third baseline here at at&t park. first pitch at 1:35. this is a three-game series against the st. louis cardinals. an important order of business to take place before the game. that's going to be the raising of the 2012 world series flag. that's the second time the giants have been able to do that in three years. you might recall the home opener in 2011 when giants great willie mays walked out the 2010 world series flag. it is not clear if he will be doing that. swag ceremony will not be easy for the st. louis cardinals to digest. they took them out denying them a shot at the world series. the players crucial at making that happen is pitcher, barry

through. that is good news here. let's take you up farther into palo alto. 101 up into san francisco. you will notice things are moving smoothly there. let's get you into the bridge. you can see san mateo bridge from the foster city perspective. lots of cars on the road this morning. into fremont. not too bad. a very light commute in this location. that will be bogged down later on. bay bridge toll pza very slow. lots of congestion. the metering lights are on. we do have an accident on the bay bridge itself. earlier, it was right at the treasure island off ramp. that's keeping things slow on the upper deck headed into the city. no major accidents to report on right now. the fog a big deal. we have an update to breaking news we have been following where police are searching the san francisco state university campus on the hunt for a man who stole a taxi cab. "today in the bay's" arturo santiago has video that is really well chased. the suspect is still at-large.

police are actively looking for this suspect. the scene was cleared a short time ago as officers did drive away the stolen cab. this started just after 2:00 this morning in the south of market area. san francisco police found a stolen cab. that driver took off leading officers on a short chase through surface streets and when he got on to southbound highway 280. california highway patrol took over the chase. you can see there speeds reached up to 100 miles an hour. the driver of the stolen cab went all the way to pacifica. turned around and ended up on the south university campus. he slowed down enough to jum out of the cab while it was still moving and the suspect took off on foot. >> he was dressed in all black. he had a hood on and a hat under the hood. he was just booking it. >> reporter: police drove that stolen cab away a short time ago. we are on tapia off of holloway on the campus of san francisco state university. they are still looking for that

suspect. we are live. i'm arturo santiago, "today in the bay." >> gilroy police still looking for the gunman that killed a man and sends another one to the hospital this morning after opening fire downtown. this happened wednesday. neighbors say both men were twa walking from a nearby market when they were attacked. one was a father of two just released from jail. friends say he was simply trying to get his life back on track. police at this hour do not have a motive for the shooting. the san jose paramedic who was shot has died. the hunt continues for the gunman. police say quinn boyer was attacked after visiting his father's home in oakland. when he stopped at the intersection of kell aer and hanson drive. a gunman shot him. propelling his car over the median into a nearby ravine. he is a great paramedic. he was loved by everybody here

at the company. >> boyer worked for the santa clara ambulance company for two years. investigators do not know if it was a robbery or attempted carjacking or even just road rage. there have been no arrests and oakland police are asking for your help in capturing boyer's killer a preschool that came under fire after a teacher was accused of tying up a toddler is once again in the spotlight. authorities telling the contra costa times they have received reports of another incident at center point christian preschool in which a teacher pinched a young boy. that teacher named in the complaint, the school said, no longer works for the school. they closed for several days of staff training taf was revealed a teacher at the school tied up a toddler's hands and feet with tape because she refused to take a nap. down to the tanker that side swiped the bay bridge back in january. state commission is blaming pilot error and is looking into

revoking that pilot's license. the pilot, guy kleess was at the helm of the overseas bay whether it struck the bridge. it caused more than $1 million in damage. the commissioners voted to revoke his license and a state law judge will make the final decision. no doubt about it. a busy day for mr. scott mcgrew. it is jobs friday and, of course, gadget friday. >> the latest jobs information, very disappointing indeed, it is. good morning to you. when we looked at the march job numbers at 5:30 our time whether they came out. 88,000 jobs were added in the month of march. this drops unemployment rate to 7.6 rate. ignore the unemployment rate as i tell you. it is this 88,000, this genuinely lousy. the dow industrials are down 139 points on that news. our gadget, this gadget friday, is a portable, shareable
